Education programs

Forensic Medicine Associates Foundation’s educational programs are a integral part of our mission and a critical part of addressing the national workforce shortage in forensic pathology and related fields. By providing hands-on training, mentorship, and exposure to real-world forensic practice, we are actively preparing the next generation of forensic pathologists, physician extenders, laboratory professionals, and medicolegal death investigators.

We offer several different educational opportunities to a wide array of students and trainees.

Forensic Pathology Fellowship

For any questions regarding the Forensic Pathology Fellowship, contact the Fellowship Program Manager, Alma Fuller.

Pathology Residents

A four-week core rotation is established with the Residency Training Program for Emory University School of Medicine Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine to provide hands-on forensic autopsy and death investigation training for junior and senior residents.

Medical Students

Four-week elective rotations are developed with multiple medical schools to provide a unique experience for medical students interested in forensic pathology.

Internships

There are a variety of internship opportunities available for students studying biology, forensic science, anthropology, criminal justice, public health, and other related fields.

Shadowing

An opportunity for students and teaching facilities to engage in an interactive tour of our facility and observe a post-mortem examination under the direct supervision of a forensic pathologist or pathologists' assistant.

available opportunities

Forensic Pathology Fellowship

The Forensic Pathology Fellowship is an intensive, one-year program designed to provide comprehensive training in forensic pathology.   Fellows gain hands-on experience in autopsy practice, death investigation, and medicolegal case management under the mentorship of experienced forensic pathologists.

Forensic Science Program

The Forensic Science Program offers students a structured internship experience that includes hands-on exposure to medicolegal autopsies, death investigation practices, and interdisciplinary aspects of forensic medicine under professional supervision. Participants commit to a set number of hours over a 12-week period and gain practical insights into the field while meeting academic and professional criteria.

Criminal Justice Program

The Criminal Justice Program is an internship designed for students pursuing a criminal justice or related degree to gain real-world experience in investigative practices and medicolegal death investigation. Participants complete at least 160 field placement hours while learning about procedures, litigation differences, case documentation, and professional interaction within a medical examiner’s office.

Anthropology Program

The Anthropology Program is an internship for students pursuing an anthropology or related degree that provides hands-on experience with forensic anthropology, including observing medicolegal autopsies, assisting with skeletal cases, and engaging in research and field activities. Participants complete a minimum of 200 hours over a 12-week period, gaining practical insight into forensic casework and death investigation alongside working professionals.

Public Health Program

The Public Health Program offers students an internship opportunity within forensic medicine that integrates principles of public health with medicolegal death investigation and forensic practice. Participants gain practical exposure to the intersection of forensic science and community health while fulfilling academic and professional requirements.

Job Shadowing Program

Our office offers single-day job shadowing opportunities on a case-by-case basis. This is not an interactive experience and is strictly observation, meaning students are able to view an autopsy but it will not be a hands-on experience.
